Enantyum 25 mg dexketoprofen
20 hard capsules
Dexketoprofen belongs to the group of active substances known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Use
Dexketoprofen is mainly used as an oral analgesic, for example for arthritis and other musculoskeletal and muscular pain. Period pains and toothaches can also be effectively relieved with dexketoprofen. Parenteral application of the active ingredient includes post-operative pain, renal colic and back pain.
Mechanism of action
The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect of dexketoprofen results from an effective inhibition of cyclooxygenases, which in turn reduces the production of inflammation-mediating prostaglandins. However, prostaglandins do not only fuel inflammation. They are also involved in pain perception and pain transmission. So dexketoprofen relieves pain in several ways. In medicines, dexketoprofen is contained as a salt of trometamolic acid to speed up the effect.
Dexketoprofen is closely related to ketoprofen, but has a distinct advantage. Compared to the original active ingredient, dexketoprofen contains only one of two molecular structures (enantiomers). In dexketoprofen, the enantiomer that is responsible for the side effects (especially gastrointestinal complaints) of ketoprofen has been removed. What remains is the molecular structure with the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The binding of the active enantiomer to trometamol reduces the toxicity to the stomach and intestines (gastric toxicity) even further.
Side effects
The most common side effects of dexketoprofen include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
Notes
Stiftung Warentest describes dexketoprofen as suitable for relieving mild to moderately severe pain. At the same time, it points out that the side effects increase with the duration of use and increasing dosage.
