Active ingredient: Tamoxifen
Tamoxifen is an antitumor agent from the group of antiestrogens, which is used for prevention and treatment of breast cancer. The effects based on the antagonism of estrogen receptors. Tamoxifen also deployed östrogenagonistische effects on some tissues. The tablets are taken orally once daily at the same time of day and without food. The most common possible side effects include fatigue, tiredness, fluid retention, skin rashes, hot flashes, nausea, vaginal bleeding and vaginal discharge. Tamoxifen has two properties, it is either östrogenantagonistisch or östrogenagonistisch depending on the tissue. In breast tissue, it acts as an antagonist, whereas the endometrium, bone and blood lipids as an agonist. Tamoxifen is therefore referred to as SERMs (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator). The effects are based on the competitive binding to intracellular estrogen receptors. Tamoxifen resp. its metabolites have a long half-life of up to 14 days.
indications
For the treatment of breast cancer (adjuvant therapy, palliative therapy). In some countries, tamoxifen is also approved for breast cancer prevention in high-risk patients.
dosage
According to the prescribing information. The tablets are taken orally once daily at the same time of day and without food. In the adjuvant treatment duration of five years is recommended.
abuse
Tamoxifen can be abused as a doping agent. For competitive athletes are prohibited during and out of competition.
Contraindications
Tamoxifen is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity, in children and adolescents and because of teratogenic properties during pregnancy and lactation. The full precautions can be found in the drug prescribing information.

As hormone receptor modulator tamoxifen can potentially alter the way other hormone preparations. In particular, with simultaneous administration of estrogens with tamoxifen, a reciprocal effect attenuation observed. The effect of the aromatase inhibitor letrozole is attenuated with concurrent use.
