Active ingredient: Doxepin

Doxepin is a drug from the group of tricyclic antidepressants and is used in addition to its use as an antidepressant in the addiction treatment, especially in opiate addicts.

characteristics
Doxepin affects primarily highly absorbent and is therefore often used in addition to the improvement in sentiment for sedation.

effect
Doxepin affects the central nervous system as an inhibitor of monoamine reuptake from the synaptic cleft into presynaptic vesicles, also anticholinergic, antihistaminic and adrenolytisch (the action of adrenaline picking). The increased through the (unselective) reuptake inhibition availability of serotonin and norepinephrine in neuronal transmission results in alleviation of depressive symptoms.
The effects of several transmitter systems by doxepin produced its characteristic side effects, which largely correspond to those of other tricyclic antidepressants.

indications
Doxepin is approved for the treatment of anxiety and depression at:

    Anxiety disorder (with or without somatic symptoms), reactive depression, depressive anxiety, alcoholism;
    psychotic depression, including endogenous depression;
    depressive phases of manic-depressive reactions;
    Post partum depression and age depression (Involutionsdepression);
    (Slight) withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol, drug or drug addiction.

Patients with the following symptoms usually respond to treatment with Doxepin: internal voltage, over anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, functional somatic complaints, lack of interest, feelings of guilt, psychomotor retardation, hypochondria.

unwanted effects
Doxepin has especially anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, hypotension and tachycardia, mydriasis and accommodation disturbances, gastrointestinal problems and micturition disorders).
It also poses special risks for the heart with it (Erregungsleitungs- and arrhythmias), further changes in blood count can as leukopenia or agranulocytosis occur. Because of the strong anticholinergic component is becoming more common than other tricyclics to pharmacogenic delirium under doxepin. Rarely, even the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion SIADH.

Interactions with UV light
Through interaction of the UV component of natural sunlight or artificial UV sources (solarium or UV therapy equipment) with Doxepin molecule a phototoxic reaction can occur in a UV dose that is usually easily tolerated.
